Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
