Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to contest specific calls made by the official, following the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
